Kula is a not so much a town (having no center) as much as it is a residential area on the west facing slopes of 10,000 ft (3048 m) Mt. Haleakala. Cooler temperatures (average 75F in January, 85F in July) and spectacular sunsets are the rule at this elevation. Beaches, major shopping, theatres, etc are 15 miles away - 1/2 hr drive. Haleakala National Park visitor center (10000 ft) is 22 miles uphill from Kula. Nearby attractions include a children's zoo (1 mile), botanical gardens (1 mile), horseback riding (2 miles), public swimming pool (4 miles), Hookipa Beach - world famous surfing spot (15 miles). Maui deserves its reputation as one of the top 5 vacation destinations in the world.
