Our area retains an individual and slightly alternative character of its own. Great local shops including Whole Foods Market, restaurants, bookshops, park. Weekly organic farmer's market. Walking distance to Arsenal Emirates Stadium. There is good access to West End / City of London by bus and train. Car available for exchange (most useful for out of city trips).
From a 2008 exchanger: "I much enjoyed your house and your neighbourhood recommendations... Stoke Newington...has the easy going charm of a US college town. Very nice place to live!"
From the Washington Post June 15 2008:
"Stoke Newington today very much retains a village charm... it has long attracted struggling artists, including many British independent filmmakers.
"Stokey," as residents affectionately call it, is also multicultural, multiracial and multigenerational. The neighborhood is compact and friendly, with most of the action centered on charming Stoke Newington Church Street.
BEST FOR: Indie shopping. The chain-store creep that has infected most of Britain's high streets has yet to hit Stoke Newington, so small independent shops dominate, including a good range of secondhand bookstores and coffee shops.
MOST CHARMING FEATURE: A peaceful resting place for past and present North Londoners, Abney Park Cemetery (Stoke Newington High Street, with an entrance on Stoke Newington Church Street) is a delight to wander through on a pleasant day. Be sure to search for the massive abandoned chapel, which is crying out to be a shoot location for a rock video.
PRETTIEST PARK: The much-used, much-loved Clissold Park (Stoke Newington Church Street) has a country feel, with duck ponds, playing fields, a playground and a cafe in a former mansion. The animal enclosure housing deer and goats dates back more than a hundred years.
BEST GRUB: Don't let the bright pink aura of Rasa (55 Stoke Newington Church St.) put you off. This is one of the most popular budget restaurants in town; no dish exceeds $12. Founded by a South Indian emigre who missed his mother's cooking, Rasa specializes in vegetarian Keralean cuisine. The dosas (pancakes) are filling, but save room for a side dish such as guava and avocado salad. Fish- and meat-eaters can head across the street to its sister eatery, Rasa Travancore (56 Stoke Newington Church St.). On weekdays, both restaurants open at 6 p.m.; booking advisable.
BEST PUB: The Rose and Crown has resisted the trendification of other area pubs and retains a quaint charm. With real English ales at non-West End prices ($5.40 a pint), wood-worn tables and open fires, it's a great place to observe the locals and listen to the banter of the friendly pub landlords."
Two season tickets to see the Arsenal may be available at cost if you visit in the soccer season.
